LAMAR, Colo. _ Bullets and other tell-tale artifacts found by National Park Service archaeologists in the last several weeks have moved officials another step closer to pinpointing the site of the infamous Sand Creek massacre.

Using metal detectors, more than a half dozen sunburned archaeologists found more than 300 artifacts on three sites in Kiowa County owned by the Dawson, Kearn and Bowen families. They include Army bullets, camp debris, hide scrapers, a broken cast-iron kettle, a harness buckle and cannonball fragments, said Doug Scott, chief project archaeologist for ...
