Kansas wants to swap the statues that represent the state in the Capitol for new ones. Critics contend that such a change only would open the door to political contention.

Congress is preparing to break with more than a century of tradition and allow states to remove the commemorative statues that decorate the Capitol. "It's not really rewriting history," says Rep. Jim Ryun, a Kansas Republican and a leader of an effort to change his state's two statues. "Rather, it's honoring history"
