Es el historiador Luis González y González quien, a unas semanas de la muerte del poeta, lo define:

"Es el Amado Nervo de los tiempos modernos. La poesía de Jaime Sabines llegará a ser más popular que la de Amado Nervo en su época, simplemente porque es poesía que le llega al pueblo: poesía universal."
