IN 1865, a German biologist called Ernst Haeckel came up with a new twist on the recently invented theory of evolution. The embryos of animals, he reckoned, experienced a process that he called ``recapitulation''. This caused them to pass through stages in which they resembled their evolutionary ancestors.
