Trawlers in the Atlantic Ocean have been scooping up unintended fish. Some victims include skates, including the threatened barndoor skate. Some have petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service to classify the barndoor as a threatened species. Research has shown that larger skates are most affected by trawlers as they have longer reproduction and maturation times.

Mechanism of interannual to decadal variability of the North Atlantic circulation
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT A model of the Atlantic Ocean was forced with decadal-scale time series of surface fluxes taken from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis. The bulk of the variability of the oceanic circulation is found to be related to the
Multidecadal Variability of North Atlantic Temperature and Salinity during the Twentieth Century
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Substantial changes occurred in the North Atlantic during the twentieth century. Here the authors demonstrate, through the analysis of a vast collection of observational data, that multidecadal fluctuations on time scales of 50-80 yr are prevalent in the upper 3000 m of the North Atlantic
Temperature Anomalies in the Northeastern North Atlantic: Subpolar and Subtropical Precursors on Multiannual Time Scales
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT An adjoint ocean general circulation model of the North Atlantic is employed to calculate sensitivities of temperature in the northeastern North Atlantic with respect to atmospheric nonlocal fluxes and ocean state variables at prior times, up to 7 yr. Maximum sensitivities cross the
North Atlantic Decadal Variability: Air-Sea Coupling, Oceanic Memory, and Potential Northern Hemisphere Resonance*
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT In this paper, the causes and mechanisms of North Atlantic decadal variability are explored in a series of coupled ocean-atmosphere simulations. The model captures the major features of the observed North Atlantic decadal variability. The North Atlantic SST anomalies in the model control
Influence of the ocean on North Atlantic climate variability 1871-1999
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT The influence of changing ocean conditions on the variability of climate in the North Atlantic region is studied by analyzing ensemble simulations with an atmospheric GCM forced with reconstructed sea surface temperature (SST) data for the period 1871-1999. The ocean influence on
