There is an increasing number of endangered species. It is thought that one third of US plant and animal species are threatened. Exacerbating the problem is the trade in wildlife for pets and supposed medical benefits. The ecological effects of losing a species are not known. Zoos and programs to manage wild animals are only marginally successful.
