LANOLIN PRICES continue to advance because of serious raw material constraints caused by a sluggish wool market. The anemic demand that continues to plague the wool industry has lead to a shortage of wool grease, lanolin's precursor. Rising wool grease costs have led to skyrocketing lanolin prices.
"Wool's share of the fibers market has fallen from 5 percent to 3.5 percent over the last few years," says Guy Kitchen, managing director of Bradford, England-based Westbrook Lanolin Company, which was acquired by Croda International PLC (CMR, 8/17/98, pg. 7).
