African American women have made great sporting achievements in the last 100 years even as they have to contend with both racism and gender bias. Black women have won numerous awards and established records in a number of sports such as athletics, basketball, tennis, golf and gymnastics. They also have proven their capability as sports leaders, with many black women holding high positions in a number of national and international organizations.
