CORN PRODUCTION UP; SELF-SUFFICIENCY IN CORNS ACHIEVED.

Indonesia managed to achieve self-sufficiency in corns in 1998, as can be seen from the fact that the domestic production of corns for the same year reached 10.05 million tons while domestic demand was only 9 million tons. The high production of corns was attributable to the success in the implementation of a corn quality improvement program on some 694,000 hectares of land as well as to the success in enlarging the total acreage of corn plantation by 117,000 hectares. Besides, the productivity of corns has also increased.
