Before Edward Kennedy Ellington began playing jazz, it was just another trendy sound that was big with the dance crowd.

But in the Duke's regal hands, jazz became art.

Thursday marks what would have been the pianist's 100th birthday and comes amid an explosion of Duke-themed concerts, TV specials and album reissues _ including RCA's exhaustive 24-CD, $407 box set ``The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition,'' due in stores Tuesday.
