'Eve's Bayou' was one of the most financially successful independent films released in 1998. The well-crafted motion picture was critically and commercially acclaimed in both art houses and mainstream theaters. Over half of its viewing audiences were white. The picture featured excellent cinematography and strong performances. What is at issue is whether the film was too well made, too sophisticated and too universal in its appeal to be considered a black film.
