John Henrik Clarke, 83, Black Studies Pioneer, Distinguished Scholar, Dies.(Brief Article)(Obituary)

John Henrik Clarke, a pioneer in African and African-American studies and history professor who did extensive research in every African country except South Africa, recently died of a heart attack at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York. He was 83.

Clarke, a native of Union Springs, AL, was a professor emeritus at Hunter College in New York, where he taught from 1968 to 1985. He established Black Studies programs at Hunter as well as at Cornell University.
