PROVIDENCE _ Given the way Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa managed to enthrall a good portion of the American public last summer with their thrilling pursuit of Roger Maris' single-season home run record, it seems almost inconceivable what happened to Henry Aaron 25 years ago last week.

Together, McGwire and Sosa brought people back to the ballpark and got then talking and thinking about a game which had appeared to be on the decline, still licking its wounds from a disastrous labor dispute four years earlier. They did it with a sustained excellence that began in April ...
