The relationship between Medicaid and mental health care services has always been complicated and problematic, which often affects access to care, quality and accountability. Yet there are signs that the relationship is improving due to the growing recognition of the relevance of Medicaid to public mental health care and the increasing collaboration between federal and state Medicaid and mental health officials. This development is significant because it could lead to improved outcomes for consumers and better accountability for taxpayers.
