Few directors are as admired for their filmmaking mastery as Elia Kazan, whose credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, and East of Eden. But artistic merit hasn't dulled the sharp resentment felt by his colleagues since he broke with the Hollywood left in 1952 and named names to the House Committee on Un-American Activities, identifying eight actors as former Communist Party members.
