During the Middle Kingdom in Egypt (c. 1986-1759 BC), burial architecture shifted from pyramids to structures carved partly into natural rock cliffs with buildings attached outside. Hatshepsut's tomb, though built during the New Kingdom (c 1539-1070 BC), followed that architectural style.
