NEW YORK -- Shares of Ames Department Stores ran up 17.7 percent, or 5 1/8, to close at 34 in heavy NASDAQ trading Thursday, as the powerhouse regional discounter topped Wall Street's full-year estimates by 7 cents a share before charges.

After charges, Ames's net for the fourth quarter fell 27.9 percent below a year ago, and for the year, net was off 1.8 percent. But prior to charges for its acquisition of Hills Stores Co., Ames notched full- year operating income of $1.72 a share, noted Rolando Aguiar, Ames's chief financial officer.
