Van Dyck's masterpiece - Portrait of Cesare Alessandro Scaglia, Abbe of Stafforda and Mandanici - has been accepted by the Government in lieu of inheritance tax, Arts Minister Alan Howarth announced today, the 400th anniversary of the artist's birthday.

The painting, from the estate of the 2nd Viscount Camrose who died in 1995, can satisfy up to GBP 9,450,000 in tax.
