John Singer Sargent, perhaps America's most revered artist of the Gilded Age, straddled two continents with incredible facility and great success. In 1926, a year after his death, for example, memorial exhibitions of his work were held in London, New York, and Boston. Hardly forgotten since that time, Sargent has been the subject of a number of exhibitions both small and large.
