COLUMBIA, S.C. _ Gymnastics has seen its share of ups and downs, almost as many as the girls' tumbling runs. Few sports have experienced as sharp a rise and fall in popularity as gymnastics, and its winter sister, figure skating.

Both sports seems to be on opposite ends of the map, yet they are quite similar. Both depend on the Olympics to draw fans. Both are dominated by women, as spectators and participants. Both glamorize athleticism and grace.

Yet somehow, gymnastics and figure skating have grown at very different paces.
