The link between foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade is examined in relation to exchange rate effects. A complementary relationship between FDI and trade is then demonstrated using data from the US food processing industry. Other factors apart from the volatility of the exchange rate of the US dollar are also shown to have contributed to the evolving link between FDI and trade. These include environmental policy, degree of openness and riskiness of investment.
