The damage potential of the Year 2000 computer problem (Y2K) can be measured tentatively by looking at its effects on mainframe computers, personal computers and embedded systems. Y2K consultants have estimated damage to cost from $300 to $600 billion worldwide while government agencies such as the Office of Management and Budget has predicted total costs at $5.4 billion. To avert its negative economic implications, Pres Bill Clinton and the US Congress have passed the "Year 2000 Information and Readiness Disclosure Act" in Oct 1998.
