INTRODUCTION

When I was first asked to give the 1998 Mattiello Lecture, I thought of a number of different topics, including mechanical properties of coatings, cure and cure characterization, and problem solving. I felt that Percy Pierce and I had covered surface defects several years ago with our Federation booklet on the subject.[1] However, discussions with colleagues and continual encounters with surface defects made me realize that defect problems have not gone away...
