Western knowledge of Asia is linked to the exercise of colonial power of the West. The Orient, according to Edward Said in his book 'Orientalism,' was the product of Western imperialism and cultural dominance. He argued that all formal Western knowledge of Asia was not a body of objective learning but mere Orientalim. Said's book has both inspired and alarmed a considerable number of Asian scholars. Their views as well as a discussion on German and British scholarship on Asia are presented.
