In June 1938, the eighty-one-year-old Achille Ratti, who had served as Pope Pius XI since 1922, exasperated by the "exaggerated nationalism" and racism of Nazi Germany, commissioned an encyclical condemning these moral evils. Quickly drawn up by three Jesuit priests, and translated into Latin by another, it was presented to Vladimir Ledochowski, the General of their Order, at the end of September 1938.(1) Plus XI died the evening of 9-10 February 1939.
