Pope Pius XI, who died in 1939, and his successor, Pope Pius XII, differed in their approaches to Nazi Germany. In 1938, a papal encyclical was commissioned to denounce racism and the violent nationalism of Germany. The encyclical was titled Humani Generis Unitatas (The Unity of the Human Race).
