Plato's editing of the dialog in the speeches of Timaeus-Critias indicates a political judiciousness. By calling attention to the absence of a fourth individual, Socrates, Plato stresses the status of the others as statesmen and philosophers as suitable for discussing matters of the Republic. Socrates, however, was considered unfit to discourse on this subject.
