Chinese Catholics have been allowed more religious freedom, but they are cut off from the rest of the church. The church may incorporate eastern icons in the future. Western Catholics travelling to China meet with Catholics and see that church and government in China are intertwined in a way that can be disconcerting to westerners though conditions have improved since the 1960s and 1970s.
