Shakespeare's Elsinore.(place in 'Hamlet')

The fictitious town of Elsinore in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' is based on actual sites in Denmark and shows the playwright's familiarity with topography and architecture probably gained from accounts of his associates. Into Elsinore are incorporated the characteristics of the port Helsingor and the castle Kronborg. The Danish sea plays a big symbolic role in the play and Elsinore is situated by this geographical feature. Shakespeare, however, took artistic liberties when he mixed up elements of local color such as vegetation and the weather.
