The book 'Nineveh and Its Remains,' by the English adventurer Austen Henry Layard revealed his discoveries about the ancient city which provided clues to ancient Assyria and Mesopotamia. The book was a success because of its subject which is of great importance to people interested in the origins of Christianity and Classical civilization. Layard's discoveries were the palaces and contemporary documents of of Assyrian kings, who ruled between 900 and 600 BC.
