Notes on the recent discovery of ancient cultivated rice at Jiahu, Henan Province: a new theory concerning the origin of Oryza japonica in China.(Special Section: Rice Domestication)

An integrated analysis of the ancient rice obtained from the archaeological excavations at Jiahu, Henan Province in China indicated that the rice grains were pro-japonica primitive type of cultivated rice with some features of the common wild rice. Investigations by scanning electronic microscopy indicated that the grains had all been processed. It was also observed that some of the pottery had carbonated rice husks within the fabric.
