One million items of Hungarian art were lost during World War II when the Red Army looted art collections of Hungarian Jews. Works by El Greco, Tintoretto, Degas, Monet and Renoir are on display in the Gallery of the Pushkin State Museum in Moscow and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. Prior to the war, these works had been in private collections of Jewish families.
