SMYRNA, Del. _ At times this winter, no lens seemed big enough to take it all in as the snow geese converged in ever-growing numbers at the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, the sky more bird than blue.

But for hunters answering a call to arms issued by worried wildlife officials, last week was not one of them. The cold snap temporarily sent this wariest of waterfowl _ a species about to eat itself out of house and home in its fragile tundra breeding area _ in search of warmer digs and greener grasses.
