As they walked the streets of New Orleans and Harlem during the 1950s, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament had to ignore the name-calling. "Nigger sisters" was the epithet of choice, used by whites who disdained an order committed to helping poor blacks (fellow clergy expressed their disapproval more subtly). When the nuns described the jeers to Mother Katharine Drexel, she simply asked, "Did you pray for them?"
