Pope Gregory VII made significant political, social and religious contributions to 11th century life, and faced problems similar to those being experienced at the beginning of the 21st century. Gregory VII coped with conflicts between Christianity and Islam, witnessed a resurgence of spirituality and fostered new developments in both civil and ecclesiastical law.
