Dante's 'Divina Commedia' translated by Reverend Henry Boyd in 1796 had a significant influence on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem 'The Ancient Mariner.' It is argued that close verbal and imagistic connections exist between the 'Inferno' and the poem. These connections also imply that Coleridge perceived his poem as a moral tale that reflects the spiritual struggle and progression seen in the first part of 'Divina Commedia.'
