The challenges to the idea of the nation posed by the poetry of Robert Burns and Janet Little are analyzed. It is argued that Burns reinforces the position of women as external to the nation while using the image of woman to unravel the holistic nation. On the other hand, Little's works depict the dependence of the ideology of nation on the construction of a gendered society and challenge the marginal position of women in society.
