Educators, parents and policymakers continue to question the effectivity of bilingual education programs and the best method to teach English and enable immigrant children to receive academic excellence. Research on whether bilingual education helps or hinders language acquisition has produced mixed results. Bilingual education will remain an issue among legislators as the number of bilingual students nationwide has almost doubled to 3.2 million between 1988 and 1998.
