Intraspecific agonistic encounters in snapping shrimp (Alpheus heterochaelis) were analyzed using single-frame video analysis. The pair of conspecifics in such an encounter are designated as the snapper, which emits a fast water jet by very rapid closure, or snap, of the large modified snapper claw, and the receiver, which is the target of the water jet. The behavior of both snapper and receiver was evaluated before, during, and after the snap. Interactions between two intact shrimp (experime...

Claw transformation and regeneration in adult snapping shrimp: test of the inhibition hypothesis for maintaining bilateral assymetry.
The Biological Bulletin ; Introduction Among crustaceans, bilateral asymmetry of the first pair of chelipeds is common; one of the paired claws is more enlarged and elaborate (major claw) than the other (minor claw). In snapping shrimps of the family Alpheidae, the major, or snapper, claw is almost as large as the abdomen
Signaling via Water Currents in Behavioral Interactions of Snapping Shrimp (Alpheus heterochaelis).
The Biological Bulletin ; JENS HERBERHOLZ [1 BARBARA SCHMITZ [2] Abstract. The snappping shrimp Alpheus heterochaelis produces a variety of different water currents during intraspecific encounters and interspecific interactions with small sympatric crabs (Eurypanopeus depressus). We studied the mechanisms of current

U.S. News & World Report ; File this under nature's odder feats: shrimpoluminescence. That's what Dutch and German scientists call bursts of light from snapping shrimp, a denizen of tropical seas that stuns its prey with a crack of sound from its oversize claw. A year ago the scientists found that the sound actually comes

Science News ; High-speed video and fancy math have overturned an old theory about how snapping shrimp make such a racket. By quickly closing oversized claws while defending their territory, clusters of certain shrimp produce enough noise to interfere with the Navy's sonar. But scientists didn't agree about how
