The horse shoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, has a visual system that is significantly influenced by circadian sensitivity changes controlled by an internal clock in the animal's brain. A live male Limulus was chronically instrumented to measure the optic nerve activity in situ. Results reveal that the increase in both the optic nerve response to absorbed photons and the spontaneous nerve activity in darkness are induced by the efferent input from the internal clock.
