From: Rocks & Minerals  |  Date: 3/1/1998  |  Author: COOK, ROBERT B.

Uvarovite, a chromium-calcium mineral and type of garnet, is valuable due to its rarity. It can be found only in ultramafic rock environments, limiting localities primarily to Scandinavian countries such as Finland. Marginally acceptable specimens of the mineral can be found in the western US and Canada. Uvarovite is emerald- to dark-green color and typically crystallizes in dodecahedral or trapezoidal forms.
