The thriving economy in 1997 did not trickle down to professional theaters, but the industry was generally economically sound during the year. A total of 197 nonprofit theaters in America are analyzed in terms of their financial, attendance and performance activity in 1997. Results reveal that these theaters spent more than $526 million and staged 51,453 performances that drew over 17.2 million patrons during the year.
