Alpine minerals in the Central Swiss Alps have been collected since prehistoric times for construction of tools and aesthetic uses. Quartz was mainly appreciated as a material for the production of goblets and bowls during the Middle Ages. Quartz was believed to be common water that changed to a solid crystal by extremely cold temperatures.
Geology has remunerated people in the Central Alps for the lack of useful ore deposits by a remarkable richness in spectacular and rare minerals.
