An infectious-diseases specialist describes diagnosing a patient with congestive cardiomyopathy and ventricular tachyarrhythmia, idiopathic. The cause of the heart problem was Chagas' disease in which Trypanosoma cruzi, a single-celled protozoan, burrows into heart muscle. The patient refused the only treatment, a heart transplant, and later died.
Miguel was wheezing like a worn-out radiator. He could no longer pretend that nothing was wrong.
