FBI probes schemes to cash phony payroll drafts

A growing number of counterfeit payroll checks are being cashed at area financial institutions this summer, prompting intensive investigations by Chicago banks, employers and law enforcement agencies.

Among those stung by counterfeiting seams in recent weeks: LaSalle National Bank, Cole Taylor Bank, steel manufacturer Ryerson Tull Inc. and local currency exchanges.
