The domestic demand for aluminum oxide, which is one basic material for aluminum, is met entirely with imports. For the past five years (1993-1997), the volume of Indonesia's aluminum oxide imports fluctuated with the tendency to increase. It reached 377,018 tons (worth US$ 79.2 million) in 1993. In 1995, it rose to 437,127 tons (worth US$ 111.5 million). In 1996, it declined by 18.4% to 356,545 tons. In 1997, it hiked by 9.8% to 391,517 tons valued at US$ 100.4 million.
