Folk music institution tunes up for expansion

Twenty years ago, Jim Hirsch was a troubadour, playing guitar at clubs and small halls throughout the Midwest, reveling in the footloose, sleep-till-noon lifestyle.

But beneath his folksy facade was a dormant entrepreneur, a shrewd business mind with an undiscovered knack for fundraising.

Those intertwined passions for music and commerce blossomed in 1982, when Mr. Hirsch became executive director of the Old Town School of Folk Music, a well-regarded but imperiled institution hitting financial low notes.
