Swooning has not been the prescribedresponse to artistic sublimity for a good century and a half, but in the period during which pilgrims of taste and sensibility flocked to the cities of Italy in pursuit of the aesthetic swoon, their transports would have been occasioned, when not by Michelangelo or Raphael, then by one or another product of the Emilian style of painting--Correggio, say, or Guido Reni.
