The biggest to be built worldwide in recent years, the 232,000 b/d Bandar Abbas refinery is set to go on stream in the coming weeks. It will be fully operational in 1998. NIOC officials want the refinery to be inaugurated by President Rafsanjani before he leaves office. There had been some earlier signals that the plant would start operations only in September this year. The refinery was built at a cost of $1.6 billion, including $1.3 billion in foreign currency.
