Microcrystalline Wax Business Faces Refinery-Based Constraints

SUPPLY CONSTRAINTS in the paraffin wax market are now affecting the availability and prices of microcrystalline wax. Bareco kicked off the recent round of increases and Witco will follow this week.

A shortage in both products is being blamed on turnarounds at the three major wax refiners: Shell, Exxon and Mobil. Shell has reportedly been down for three months.

The crimp in supply first manifested itself in higher prices for paraffin waxes near the end of last year. Prices for microcrystalline grades are now following suit as wax refiners have become less keen to ...
