Scientists search for alternatives to transplant patients with failing hearts

An estimated 40,000 patients could benefit from heart transplantation, but only about 2400 operations are performed each year, due to the short supply of donor organs. One solution to this problem is increasing organ donation. Another is identifying options other than human transplants to fix ailing hearts.
